Plan a trip around Asar Pandhra (Dahi-Chiura Khane Din)History & origin
Falls at the height of the monsoon, when transplanting rice seedlings from nurseries into flooded paddies is most physically demanding — the day evolved into a communal, celebratory break from that labor, recognized nationally as Rastriya Dhan Diwas (National Paddy Day) alongside its older agricultural roots.
How it’s celebrated
Farming communities plant rice together in flooded fields, often turning the muddy work into games — mud-throwing, singing and dancing in the paddies is common in rural areas. Across the country, families and workplaces share dahi-chiura, sometimes with achaar and other accompaniments, regardless of whether they farm.
Tips for visitors
If traveling through Nepal's farming regions in late June, expect to see rice-planting turned into a communal, festive occasion — a good day to try dahi-chiura yourself.
