Jawalakhel, Patan

Plan a trip around Bhoto Jatra
The climactic final ceremony of the Rato Machhindranath Jatra, held at Jawalakhel in Patan. A sacred jeweled vest (bhoto) is displayed to the crowd from atop the chariot, tied to a legend about a farmer, a Naga (serpent deity) king, and a stolen vest.

History & origin

Legend tells of a farmer who cured a Naga (serpent king) of an eye ailment and was given a jeweled vest (bhoto) in gratitude, which was later stolen by a jalyakha (a spirit) and recovered by the farmer at a public gathering. The Naga king is said to appear each year at this ceremony hoping to reclaim the vest, so it is displayed publicly in case its rightful owner comes forward.

How it’s celebrated

In front of a large crowd gathered at Jawalakhel, officials climb atop the Rato Machhindranath chariot and hold up the jeweled bhoto, displaying it from all four sides so that anyone with a claim to it may come forward — none ever has, and the vest is returned for safekeeping until the next year. The ceremony brings the weeks-long chariot festival to a close.
