Plan a trip around Ghode JatraHistory & origin
Legend holds that a demon named Tundi terrorized the valley until it was trapped and buried at what is now Tundikhel, with horses ridden over the site each year since to keep it from resurfacing; the festival was later absorbed into state tradition, with the Nepal Army parading cavalry and performing equestrian displays at Tundikhel.
How it’s celebrated
The Nepal Army holds horse races, tent-pegging and other equestrian displays at Tundikhel in central Kathmandu, drawing large public crowds; households also traditionally cook and eat a mix of beaten rice, meat and vegetables (an early precursor to today's variety of Newar snack platters) on this day.
Tips for visitors
One of the more accessible public spectacles in central Kathmandu — free to watch from Tundikhel's edges, with a festive, informal crowd atmosphere.
