Plan a trip around Gyalpo Lhosar (Sherpa/Tibetan New Year)
The New Year of Sherpa and Tibetan Buddhist communities, observed with prayers at monasteries, traditional dress, dance and feasting, prominent in the Everest (Khumbu), Helambu and Boudhanath areas.

History & origin

The New Year of the Tibetan lunar calendar, observed by Sherpa, Tibetan and related Buddhist communities in Nepal, marking a fresh start with rituals meant to dispel the previous year's misfortune.

How it’s celebrated

Households are cleaned and prepared in the days before, and families gather for prayers at monasteries, the lighting of butter lamps, and a feast featuring guthuk, a noodle soup with hidden symbolic ingredients said to reveal something about the year ahead. Boudhanath Stupa hosts large public gatherings and circumambulation, while Khumbu-region monasteries near Everest and Helambu hold their own community celebrations.

Tips for visitors

Boudhanath Stupa and Khumbu-region monasteries hold prayers and celebrations — a meaningful time to be in Sherpa or Tibetan Buddhist communities.
