Plan a trip around Holi (Fagu Purnima)History & origin
Rooted in the legend of Holika, sister of a demon king who tried to burn Prahlad, a devotee of Vishnu, in a fire — Prahlad emerged unharmed while Holika, despite a boon of fire-immunity, was consumed, symbolizing good's triumph over evil; a bonfire (Holika Dahan) the night before Holi reenacts this.
How it’s celebrated
The evening before, communities burn a bonfire representing Holika's defeat. The next day, people take to the streets and public squares throwing colored powder (abir) and water at each other, regardless of age or status, and share sweets with family and neighbors. The hills, including Kathmandu, celebrate a day earlier than the Terai, where the festival is called Fagu and observed on the full moon itself.
Tips for visitors
Durbar Square areas in Kathmandu, Thamel and Basantapur turn into open-air color fights — expect to get thoroughly covered in colored powder if you join in, and dress accordingly.
