Kumari Jatra

कुमारी जात्रा

September 25, 2026 · Ashwin 9, 2083 BS

Kathmandu (Durbar Square)

Plan a trip around Kumari Jatra
The single day within Indra Jatra when the Kumari, Kathmandu's living child goddess, is pulled in procession through the old city in a wooden chariot alongside representations of Ganesh and Bhairab — one of only a handful of public appearances she makes each year.

History & origin

The Kumari tradition, in which a young pre-pubescent Newar girl is worshipped as the living embodiment of the goddess Taleju, is said to date to the Malla period; one popular legend holds that King Jayaprakash Malla offended the goddess Taleju, who withdrew her presence and could only be persuaded to remain by inhabiting a young girl chosen from the Newar Shakya community, renewed each time the reigning Kumari reaches puberty.

How it’s celebrated

The Kumari, dressed in ceremonial red and gold with her distinctive third-eye makeup, is carried to her chariot and pulled through Kathmandu Durbar Square, Basantapur and the old city streets, with crowds gathering for a glimpse and, historically, the head of state paying respects to her as she passes.

Tips for visitors

One of the most distinctive living-culture spectacles in the valley — arrive early to Kathmandu Durbar Square for a clear view of the chariot's departure.
