Kathmandu (old city neighborhoods)

Plan a trip around Lakhey Jatra
The masked demon-dance tradition performed through Indra Jatra, in which dancers embodying the Lakhey — a fanged, red-faced guardian spirit — move through Kathmandu's streets to drums and cymbals, believed to protect the city and its children from harm.

History & origin

The Lakhey is understood in Newar tradition as a once-malevolent spirit tamed and turned protector, particularly of children; the most famous Lakhey, the Majipa Lakhey of Kathmandu's Majipat neighborhood, is said to date back centuries and is treated as the city's guardian figure during the festival period.

How it’s celebrated

Masked Lakhey dancers, accompanied by drummers, move through Kathmandu's old neighborhoods over the course of Indra Jatra, performing an energetic dance at each stop while crowds, especially children, gather to watch — the Lakhey is considered auspicious to be touched or blessed by during the performance.

Tips for visitors

One of the most photogenic and approachable parts of Indra Jatra — look for the red, fanged Lakhey masks moving through Kathmandu's old city streets to live drumming.
