Plan a trip around MadhushravaniHistory & origin
Rooted in Mithila's oral folk tradition, Madhushravani blends worship of snake deities and Shiva-Parvati with a body of local folk stories recited nightly by female relatives — the observance is understood as both a religious discipline and a structured transmission of Maithili women's oral culture to a new bride.
How it’s celebrated
A newly married woman observes 15 days of dietary and ritual discipline, gathering flowers and leaves each morning for worship, while female relatives and neighbors gather each evening to recite traditional Madhushravani folk stories — the observance closes with a ritual worship of snake deities alongside Shiva and Parvati.
Tips for visitors
A private, women-centered Maithili tradition — most relevant if you have a connection to a Maithili Brahmin family observing it, rather than something visible from the street.
