Plan a trip around Mani Rimdu (Tengboche)History & origin
Commemorates the establishment of Buddhism in the Himalaya, its masked dances depicting the subjugation of hostile pre-Buddhist deities and their conversion into protectors of the Buddhist teachings — a theme shared with other Mani Rimdu celebrations at monasteries across the Everest and Solu regions.
How it’s celebrated
Monks spend days beforehand in private rituals, including preparing a sand mandala and empowering sacred substances. The festival opens to the public with the Mani Rimdu dances proper: monks in elaborate masks and costumes perform a sequence of ritual dances in the monastery courtyard over two days, depicting the defeat and conversion of malevolent forces, watched by villagers, monks and trekkers alike.
Tips for visitors
One of the most iconic events for trekkers in the Everest region — many Everest Base Camp itineraries are timed specifically around Mani Rimdu at Tengboche.
