Plan a trip around Matya JatraHistory & origin
'Mata' means light and 'ya' a sacred journey or festival — Matya developed as a Patan-specific extension of Gai Jatra, channeling the same impulse to guide the souls of the recently departed, but directed here toward the merit of visiting and illuminating every Buddhist sacred site in the city in one continuous circuit.
How it’s celebrated
Devotees begin before dawn and walk a fixed route touching nearly all of Patan's Buddhist monastic courtyards and stupas, lighting butter lamps and leaving offerings at each stop, continuing the circuit late into the night. The day overlaps with Panchadaan, when households display statues of Dipankara Buddha and offer monks and priests five kinds of grain plus salt.
Tips for visitors
One of the more physically demanding but rewarding Newar Buddhist observances to witness — Patan's old city stays busy with lamp-carrying processions from dawn until well after dark.
