Plan a trip around SamyakHistory & origin
'Samyak' takes its name from a local title for Dipankara, sometimes called the 'Samyak god,' associated with alms-giving in Newar Buddhist tradition. Gathering the valley's many Dipankara statues in one place for collective veneration and mass alms-giving is understood as an act of extraordinary merit precisely because of its rarity.
How it’s celebrated
Dozens of large Dipankara Buddha images from monasteries across the valley are carried to a central gathering point and displayed together, drawing large crowds of devotees who make offerings of food, money and grain to accompanying monks and priests.
Tips for visitors
A rare event rather than an annual fixture — worth asking locally whether a Samyak gathering is scheduled during your visit, since it isn't held every year.
