Kathmandu Valley (Newar communities)
Plan a trip around Sithi NakhaHistory & origin
Traditionally linked to Kumar's victory over a demon, the day was set aside for community water-source maintenance in the Kathmandu Valley's Newar settlements — an early form of civic water management folded into religious practice, timed just before the monsoon recharges the valley's aquifers.
How it’s celebrated
Newar communities clean and worship stone spouts (hiti), wells and ponds, and hold a family puja at home for Kumar. It is also traditionally treated as the last day before the busy agricultural monsoon season begins, when families gather for a substantial meal before the harder farm work ahead.
Tips for visitors
A community-organized, practical festival rather than a spectacle — visible mainly as cleaning and small worship gatherings around traditional stone water spouts in Kathmandu Valley Newar neighborhoods.
