Plan a trip around Tharu MaghiHistory & origin
Maghi marks the end of the Tharu agricultural and social year — traditionally the day annual labor contracts, tenancies and even some marriages were settled or renewed — making it both a religious and a civic new year for Tharu communities across the western and central Terai.
How it’s celebrated
Extended families gather for a feast built around pork, fish, rice beer (jaand) and other traditional Tharu dishes, and communities hold Tharu folk dances and music through the following days. In some districts, Maghi is also when village elders traditionally settle disputes and renew community leadership roles.
Tips for visitors
A good window to experience Tharu culture directly if traveling through Chitwan, Bardiya or the wider Terai — community feasts and dances are common through the following days.
