Hindu Temple Etiquette in Nepal: What to Know Before You Visit
September 21, 2026 · Site Administrator
Most of Nepal's Hindu temples are active places of worship rather than historical monuments, and a few habits go a long way toward being a respectful visitor. Remove your shoes before entering temple interiors — look for a shoe rack, or follow what other visitors and devotees are doing if you're unsure. Dress modestly: shoulders and knees covered is a safe default at any Hindu temple.
Many temple inner sanctums (garbhagriha) are closed to non-Hindus, and at some sites this extends to the whole temple complex, not just the innermost shrine. This isn't a tourism restriction so much as a longstanding practice around ritual purity that predates modern tourism entirely — our guides will tell you clearly what can and can't be entered at each specific site, rather than let you find out by trying.
Photography rules vary by site and are worth asking about before you raise a camera, particularly of active rituals, priests, or other worshippers. At Pashupatinath specifically, the cremation ghats along the Bagmati River are an active site of mourning for the families present — keep a respectful distance and don't photograph funeral rites directly, even from public viewing areas across the river.
If you want to make an offering (flowers, food or a small donation are common), it's fine to ask a priest or an accompanying guide how to do so appropriately at that specific site — practices vary between temples and traditions, and asking is always better than guessing. Greetings are simple: "Namaste," said with palms together at chest height, works in almost any situation. None of this requires memorizing an exhaustive rulebook in advance; following your guide's lead in the moment covers most situations you'll actually encounter.
