The Significance of Pashupatinath

September 21, 2026 · Site Administrator

Pashupatinath, on the banks of the Bagmati River in Kathmandu, is among the most significant Shiva temples anywhere, and a major pilgrimage destination for Hindus from across South Asia, not only Nepal. "Pashupati" — "lord of the animals" — is one of Shiva's names, and the temple's core structure, an active site of worship for centuries, sits at the heart of a much larger complex of shrines, ghats and monastic buildings along the river. The temple's location on the Bagmati is not incidental: the river itself is considered sacred, and the ghats along its banks at Pashupatinath are used for Hindu cremation rites, making the site simultaneously a place of everyday worship and a place where death is treated as a sacred passage rather than something to be hidden away. This is part of why the site can feel intense for first-time visitors — mourning families are genuinely present, not staged for onlookers, and our guides ask visitors to keep a respectful distance from active cremations rather than treat them as a spectacle. Non-Hindu visitors cannot enter the main temple building but can view it and explore much of the surrounding complex, including areas overlooking the ghats, from the opposite riverbank and designated public areas. The complex also includes numerous smaller shrines, resident sadhus (Hindu ascetics) who are sometimes open to a respectful photograph in exchange for a small donation, and — nearby — Guhyeshwari, a significant Shakti (goddess) temple that's often visited on the same trip. Pashupatinath is UNESCO-listed as part of the Kathmandu Valley World Heritage site, reflecting both its architectural and its ongoing religious significance — it remains a fully active place of worship today, not a preserved historical site experienced only as a monument.
