What Is a Stupa? Prayer Wheels, Prayer Flags and Circumambulation Explained

September 21, 2026 · Site Administrator

These terms come up constantly at Buddhist sites in Nepal, and knowing them in plain English makes a visit considerably more legible. A stupa is a dome-shaped Buddhist monument, traditionally built to house relics or to mark a significant site, and understood as a physical representation of the Buddha's enlightened mind rather than simply a building. Stupas range enormously in scale, from Boudhanath's massive structure, one of the most significant Tibetan Buddhist stupas outside Tibet, down to small chaityas — miniature stupa-form shrines — found throughout Kathmandu Valley's courtyards and street corners. Circumambulation is the practice of walking around a sacred structure, almost always clockwise at Buddhist sites in Nepal, as a devotional act. You don't need to understand the full doctrinal reasoning to participate respectfully — simply follow the same direction as everyone else. Prayer wheels are cylindrical wheels, often metal, inscribed with mantras (most commonly the mantra of Avalokiteshvara, the bodhisattva of compassion). Spinning a prayer wheel is understood as equivalent, in devotional terms, to reciting the mantra inside it; devotees spin them clockwise with the right hand as they walk. Prayer flags are strings of colored cloth squares, each printed with mantras, prayers and symbolic images, hung at monasteries, stupas, bridges and mountain passes. As the flags weather and fade in the wind, the prayers are traditionally understood to be carried outward — which is also why old, faded flags are simply replaced with new ones rather than removed and discarded casually. A monastery (gompa) is a residential community of monks or nuns organized around study and practice, distinct from a stupa, which is a monument rather than a residence — though many monasteries are built around or near a stupa or chaitya as part of their grounds.
