Ashtamatrika Yatra: Eight Mother Goddesses
♡A two-day specialist yatra following one Newar city's traditional eight-mother-goddess protective circuit, presented with clear notes on where local traditions vary between cities.
Best for: Advanced Shakta-tradition traveler comfortable with an evolving, scholarly itinerary
Destinations: Kathmandu Valley
Overview
Ashtamatrika ("eight mothers") shrine circuits ring several of the valley's Newar cities as a form of traditional protective sacred geography — but Kathmandu, Patan and Bhaktapur each maintain their own distinct set of eight shrines, and the specific goddesses, locations and associated festivals differ meaningfully between them. This yatra focuses on one city's circuit at a time rather than presenting a single generic "valley-wide" set, since collapsing the three into one would misrepresent genuinely distinct local traditions.
We confirm which city's circuit fits your interests and dates before booking, and our guide — a local specialist for that specific city's tradition — is direct about which parts of the circuit are consistently documented locally and which remain the subject of differing accounts between neighborhoods or textual sources. As with our other specialist yatras, we treat this as an evolving, locally-verified itinerary rather than a fixed package finalized without community input.
