Char Narayan Yatra: Four Sacred Vishnu Shrines
♡A two-day pilgrimage to the four Narayan (Vishnu) shrines traditionally visited together in Kathmandu Valley, including Changu Narayan.
Best for: Traveler interested in Vaishnava (Vishnu) tradition and valley temple history
Destinations: Kathmandu Valley
Overview
The four Narayan shrines of Kathmandu Valley — most prominently Changu Narayan, one of the valley's oldest documented temple sites — are traditionally visited together as a set within Vaishnava (Vishnu-worshipping) practice. This journey follows that circuit, with time at each shrine and cultural interpretation of Vishnu's significance in Nepali Hindu tradition throughout.
Changu Narayan in particular is a UNESCO World Heritage site with well-documented history stretching back over a millennium, and our guide draws on established scholarship there. For the smaller, less-studied shrines in the circuit, we're more measured about historical specifics and focus on their living devotional role today rather than asserting uncertain historical claims.
