Janakpur & Sacred Terai

Overview

Janakpur sits in Nepal's Terai lowlands, a different cultural and geographic register from our hill and mountain journeys — flat, warmer, and home to Maithili culture and language rather than the Newar or Sherpa traditions covered elsewhere in our catalogue. This journey centers on the Janaki Mandir temple complex, traditionally identified with the Ramayana's Sita, alongside the city's distinctive temple architecture and pilgrimage tanks.

Because Janakpur is a genuine overland journey from Kathmandu, the trip includes a full travel day each way, with the middle days spent in the city itself: guided time at Janaki Mandir, a walk through the old town's temple architecture, and an introduction to Maithili art and culture, distinct from what our valley-based journeys cover.
