Living Newar Buddhism

Overview

Newar Buddhism is a living Vajrayana tradition specific to the valley's Newar community, with its own priesthood (the Vajracharya and Shakya castes), its own bahal and bahi courtyard-monastery architecture, and its own ritual calendar — distinct from, though historically connected to, the Tibetan Buddhist tradition more commonly associated with Himalayan Buddhism internationally. This journey is built specifically to avoid collapsing the two together, spending real time in Patan and Kathmandu's Newar Buddhist courtyards rather than treating Newar Buddhism as a footnote to a Tibetan-monastery-focused itinerary.

Much of Newar Buddhism is practiced within family and caste-based religious roles rather than a monastic system in the Tibetan sense, and our guide — chosen for specific knowledge of this tradition — explains that structural difference directly. Some bahals are quietly functioning residential courtyards rather than public monuments, so visits are kept low-key and respectful of the families living there.
