Lumbini & Kapilavastu Heritage Journey

♡

A four-day journey extending our Lumbini pilgrimage into the wider archaeological landscape traditionally associated with the Buddha's early life, presented with clear archaeological caveats.

Best for: Traveler with a deeper interest in Buddhist archaeology and history, comfortable with genuine scholarly uncertainty

Destinations: Lumbini

Overview

Beyond Lumbini itself, the surrounding region includes sites traditionally connected to the Buddha's early life — among them Tilaurakot, popularly identified with ancient Kapilavastu, the kingdom of the Buddha's father, along with Kudan, Devadaha and Ramagrama. This journey extends our standard Lumbini pilgrimage to include this wider circuit, with a guide who distinguishes established archaeological findings from traditional religious identification throughout.

We're direct about a genuine point of scholarly debate here: the precise location of historical Kapilavastu is not settled beyond dispute among archaeologists and historians, with Tilaurakot in Nepal and a site at Piprahwa across the modern border in India both put forward by different scholars. We present Tilaurakot as it's popularly and traditionally identified in Nepal, while noting this ongoing academic discussion rather than asserting a single settled answer. The same care applies to Kudan, Devadaha and Ramagrama, whose specific historical identifications rest more on tradition and textual reference than on conclusive archaeological proof.
