Manakamana–Gorkha Yatra

Overview

Manakamana, a wish-fulfilling form of the goddess, is one of Nepal's most-visited pilgrimage sites for Nepali Hindus, reached by a scenic cable car above the Trishuli and Marshyangdi valleys rather than a long climb. This journey pairs a pilgrimage visit there with nearby Gorkha, historically significant as the seat from which the Shah dynasty unified Nepal, giving the trip both a devotional and a historical dimension.

The cable car ride itself is a genuine part of the experience — a different way of approaching a hilltop temple than the on-foot pilgrimage climbs common elsewhere in Nepal — with sweeping valley views on the ascent. At Gorkha, a guided visit to the historic Gorkha Durbar palace complex adds context on Nepal's political and religious history, distinct from Manakamana's purely devotional focus.
