Newar Living Heritage of Bhaktapur

♡

A four-day journey based in Bhaktapur's preserved old city, spending real time with Newar craft families and community members rather than passing through as a day-trip stop.

Best for: Culture traveler wanting depth over breadth in the Kathmandu Valley

Destinations: Kathmandu Valley

Overview

Most visitors see Bhaktapur as a half-day stop on a wider Kathmandu Valley tour; this journey bases you there instead, with time to spend with Newar craft families — potters, woodcarvers, thangka painters — whose work is still organized around traditional guild-like community structures. It's a slower, more grounded counterpart to our multi-region Living Traditions Nepal journey for guests who only have a few days.

Mornings are spent with a specific craft family or community host, watching and, where the host is comfortable, trying a step of the process yourself; afternoons are left open to wander Bhaktapur's largely pedestrian old city independently. As with our other community-hosted journeys, host families are paid transparently as part of the program cost.
