Thangka Painting Workshop
♡A four-day hands-on workshop learning the basics of thangka painting from a Kathmandu Valley artist, alongside the Buddhist context the tradition comes from.
Best for: Traveler interested in Buddhist sacred art
Destinations: Kathmandu Valley
Overview
Thangka painting is a Tibetan Buddhist devotional art form with its own strict iconography and technique, traditionally learned over years of apprenticeship. This workshop doesn't claim to teach mastery in four days — instead, it introduces the tradition's history and meaning alongside a genuine hands-on introduction to materials and basic technique under a working artist's guidance.
Mornings are spent with the artist on technique — grinding pigments, basic linework, an introduction to proportion and iconography — while afternoons include guided visits to see thangka in their intended context at valley monasteries. You'll leave with a basic practice piece and a real understanding of the skill involved, not a finished museum-quality thangka.
