Vajrayana Nepal

Overview

Vajrayana ("diamond vehicle") is a major Buddhist tradition practiced in Nepal in both Tibetan and Newar forms, known partly for its use of visualization, mantra, ritual implements and complex sacred art such as mandalas. This journey introduces Vajrayana at a level appropriate for visitors with no prior background: its place within the broader Buddhist tradition, and the visible expressions of it in valley monasteries, art and architecture.

We are direct about what this journey is not: it does not offer or imply access to empowerments, initiations, restricted teachings or tantric practices, which within Vajrayana tradition are transmitted only through established teacher-student relationships and are not something a short tourist visit can authentically provide. What we can offer is informed observation and explanation — visits to monasteries and art with a knowledgeable guide who explains general principles honestly, including where popular accounts oversimplify a genuinely complex tradition.
