Plan a trip around Chhath Parva
A demanding, austere festival dedicated to the sun god, observed intensely in Nepal's Terai region and by the Madhesi community nationwide. Devotees fast for extended periods and gather at riverbanks or ponds at sunrise and sunset to offer prayers while standing in the water.

History & origin

Dedicated to Surya, the sun god, and his consort Usha, thanking them for sustaining life on earth. Its origins are traced to ancient Vedic sun worship, and it is considered one of the most rigorous and purity-focused festivals observed in the region.

How it’s celebrated

Observers keep a 36-hour fast without water, bathe in a river or pond, and prepare traditional offerings such as thekuwa (a wheat and jaggery sweet). At sunset and again at sunrise the following day, devotees wade into the water carrying bamboo baskets (soop) piled with fruit, sugarcane and flowers, standing for long periods to offer arghya (prayers with water) directly to the sun.

Tips for visitors

The riverbank gatherings at dawn and dusk — devotees standing in water, offering baskets of fruit and flowers to the rising or setting sun — are a striking, contemplative scene, most visible in the Terai.
