Plan a trip around Ganga Dashahara
A Hindu festival marking the descent of the river Ganga to earth, observed with ritual bathing at rivers and sacred water sites believed to be especially purifying on this day.

History & origin

Commemorates the legend of King Bhagiratha's penance to bring the celestial river Ganga down to earth to purify the ashes of his ancestors — Shiva is said to have broken her fall by catching her in his hair, releasing her gradually onto the Himalaya and down to the plains.

How it’s celebrated

Devotees bathe in rivers at dawn, with the ritual bathing fair (mela) at the Vishwanath temple in Baitadi, far-western Nepal, among the best known observances; elsewhere, people bathe in local rivers and make offerings believed to wash away accumulated sin.

Tips for visitors

A devotional river-bathing day rather than a public spectacle — most visible at riverside temple fairs in the far-western hills.
