Plan a trip around Hanuman JayantiHistory & origin
Hanuman's devotion to Ram — most famously his leap to Lanka and his role in the battle to rescue Sita — has made him a model of loyal service and selfless strength in Hindu devotional practice, with temples to him found at the entrances of palaces and important sites, including Kathmandu's own Hanuman Dhoka Durbar Square, named for his statue at its gate.
How it’s celebrated
Devotees visit Hanuman temples and shrines, offer vermilion (sindoor) and oil — traditional offerings believed to please him — and recite the Hanuman Chalisa, a devotional hymn recounting his deeds and virtues.
Tips for visitors
A relatively low-key day for visitors — worth knowing about if you notice extra activity at Hanuman shrines, including the statue at Kathmandu's Hanuman Dhoka gate.
