Plan a trip around Haribodhini EkadashiHistory & origin
Closes the Chaturmas period begun in Asar, when Vishnu's yogic sleep was believed to leave the world without his active protection; his 'awakening' on this day is marked in many households by Tulsi Vivah, a ceremony marrying the Tulsi plant to a form of Vishnu, closing the devotional cycle that opened four months earlier.
How it’s celebrated
Devotees fast, visit Vishnu temples, and in many households perform Tulsi Vivah — a small ceremonial wedding between a Tulsi plant and a Shaligram stone or image of Vishnu — after which weddings and other auspicious ceremonies, paused through Chaturmas, may resume.
Tips for visitors
A quiet, devotional day — mainly relevant as the point in the calendar when Nepali wedding season picks back up after its Chaturmas pause.
