Plan a trip around Harishayani EkadashiHistory & origin
According to Vaishnava tradition, Vishnu withdraws into yogic sleep on this day atop the cosmic serpent Shesha, leaving the world in the custodianship of Shiva until his awakening roughly four months later — a period historically associated with the monsoon, when travel and major undertakings were traditionally curtailed.
How it’s celebrated
Devout Hindus, especially Vaishnavas, begin a stricter fasting regimen and avoid weddings and other auspicious ceremonies through Chaturmas. Tulsi (holy basil) plants are ceremonially planted or tended on this day, a practice tied to Vishnu's consort Tulsi.
Tips for visitors
A quiet, devotional day rather than a public festival — mainly relevant if you notice a lull in Nepali wedding season through the following months.
