Plan a trip around Haritalika TeejHistory & origin
Commemorates the goddess Parvati's fast and penance to win Shiva as her husband; 'haritalika' refers to her friends who helped hide her from her father so she could continue her austerities.
How it’s celebrated
Women fast — some without water — and gather the evening before for a feast (dar khane din) with family. On Teej itself, dressed in red saris and gold jewelry, they visit Shiva temples, especially Pashupatinath, to sing, dance and pray for their husbands' long life or, for unmarried women, a good future husband.
Tips for visitors
Pashupatinath temple sees large numbers of women in red saris singing and dancing in the temple courtyards — a striking, color-filled scene for visitors.
