Plan a trip around Kaag Tihar
The first day of Tihar, honoring crows as messengers of Yama, the god of death, with offerings of food left on rooftops and in courtyards to keep misfortune at bay.

History & origin

Crows are traditionally regarded as emissaries of Yama, and their caw is held to be an omen — feeding them on this day is a gesture of respect meant to avert bad news and death from the household for the year ahead.

How it’s celebrated

Families place a small portion of rice, sweets and other food on rooftops, in courtyards or at crossroads for crows to eat, opening the five-day Tihar cycle that continues through Bhai Tika.

Tips for visitors

A quiet, low-key start to Tihar — worth knowing about as the reason plates of food appear on rooftops and doorsteps across Nepal this week.
