Nationwide (river confluences)

Plan a trip around Maghe Sankranti
Marks the sun's transition into the Nepali month of Magh, traditionally the start of longer, warmer days. Celebrated with ritual bathing at river confluences (most famously Devghat and the Tribeni/Sankhamul area) and eating warming foods like sesame sweets (til ko laddu), sweet potato and ghee.

History & origin

A solar festival marking Surya's movement into the Makar (Capricorn) sign, traditionally read as the sun beginning its journey toward longer days after the depths of winter — observed as an auspicious turning point across Hindu communities in South Asia under related names such as Makar Sankranti.

How it’s celebrated

Pilgrims bathe at dawn in rivers and confluences believed to be especially purifying on this day, most notably where the Trishuli and Kali Gandaki meet at Devghat. Afterward, families eat foods thought to bring warmth and strength through winter — sesame and molasses sweets (til ko laddu), ghee, sweet potato and yam — and it also marks the day the Tharu community in the Terai begins its own new year celebrations.

Tips for visitors

A quieter, more devotional festival than Dashain or Tihar — worth knowing about for the ritual river bathing at sacred confluences if your itinerary passes through one.
