Plan a trip around Maha NavamiHistory & origin
Rooted in the same Navaratri cycle honoring Durga's battle forms, but this day's focus on tools and machinery draws on the older Vishwakarma tradition of honoring the divine craftsman and, by extension, the implements that sustain a household's livelihood — vehicles, kitchen knives, farm tools and, in modern practice, computers and machinery are all included.
How it’s celebrated
Households and businesses clean and garland their vehicles, tools and equipment, mark them with tika, and often sacrifice an animal at workshops, transport depots or temples associated with craft and trade. In the Kathmandu Valley, the Taleju temple's Navadurga worship and craft-specific guild rituals are especially elaborate.
Tips for visitors
A good day to notice Nepal's taxis, buses and trucks decorated with flowers, tika and sometimes a garland of marigolds across their windshields.
