Plan a trip around PhulpatiHistory & origin
Traditionally the sacred jamara and nabapatrika bundle for the royal Dashain rites were carried on foot from Gorkha, birthplace of Nepal's Shah dynasty, to Kathmandu — a practice maintained today with a motorcade escort, and marked at Hanuman Dhoka with a state ceremony and a gun salute historically attended by the head of state.
How it’s celebrated
The Phulpati procession arrives at Kathmandu's Hanuman Dhoka Durbar Square to a formal state welcome and cannon salute, while households across the country bring their own nabapatrika bundle into the home shrine and continue Navaratri worship of Durga.
Tips for visitors
The state ceremony at Hanuman Dhoka is a rare chance to see a formal Dashain ritual with historical royal-court trappings still performed publicly in Kathmandu.
