How it’s celebrated
Family members visit their eldest relatives, usually starting with grandparents, to receive tika and jamara along with a blessing and often a small gift of money (dakshina); the ritual then cascades down through the extended family over the following days as everyone seeks tika from elders in order of seniority. Kite-flying is common in the days around Vijaya Dashami, traditionally believed to signal the gods that the rains are over.
Tips for visitors
The single busiest travel day of the Nepali calendar, as people converge on their family home for tika — expect very full transport and closed businesses nationwide.
