Janakpur (Mithila region)

Plan a trip around Vivaha Panchami
Commemorates the wedding of Ram and Sita, reenacted each year with a major pilgrimage fair (mela) at Janakpur's Janaki Mandir, drawing devotees from across Nepal and India's Mithila region.

History & origin

Marks the day the Ramayana holds that Ram, come to Mithila for a bow-breaking contest set by King Janak, won Sita's hand in marriage — an episode considered one of the epic's most auspicious moments and central to Mithila's own religious identity.

How it’s celebrated

Janakpur hosts a large wedding-procession reenactment (barat) with musicians and costumed performers, and the Janaki Mandir and surrounding streets fill with pilgrims for the multi-day mela; smaller commemorations take place at Ram and Sita temples elsewhere in Nepal and northern India.

Tips for visitors

One of Janakpur's biggest annual events — if visiting the Terai around this date, the Janaki Mandir mela is worth the detour for its scale and color.
